Comeback Medvedev Wins First Championship in Nearly 30 Months
Nineteen of Medvedev's 21 victories have been earned on hardcourt
A revitalized Daniil Medvedev secured his initial title for nearly 30 months with a win over opponent Moutet in the competition final.
The Russian, a former world number one, has experienced a torrid season, achieving just one match at the big events and undergoing a meltdown at the New York tournament.
His unpredictability on the professional circuit - and difficulties with his serve in especial - led to him falling of the top ten and finally parting ways with former trainer Gilles Cervara.
Currently working with Johansson and Goetzke, Medvedev has gradually progressed in the past month - peaking in a closely contested 7-5 4-6 6-3 victory over challenger Moutet.
This represents Medvedev's initial championship following the 2023 Rome Masters and initial on a hardcourt since spring of 2023.
Victory also signifies the Russian has secured 21 championships at twenty-one various competitions.
"It's the first time I'm at a tournament with my children at once, so to win a trophy is really nice," commented tennis professional Medvedev.
"This title is in tribute of my child my daughter, because the first title I achieved when my first daughter her name was born was for her."
The tennis star, the 2021 US Open champion, had been defeated in his past six title deciders, featuring in the German tournament previously this season.
Medvedev's defensive strategy and regular outbursts on court had prompted observers to doubt if his capacity to perform at the elite level was concluded.
Yet the 29-year-old has implemented adjustments in the last few weeks, attempting to advance forward and perform positively, supported by an improved serve.
The champion recovered from a deficit in the first set against the challenging opponent, taking four of the final five games to go ahead.
The competitors swapped breaks in the middle set before the Frenchman, bidding for his maiden professional victory, gained dominance to force a decider.
Moutet defended 4 initial chances in a close third set before the champion broke to that score to secure the win.
Fittingly, he secured the win with a shot at the net, with the Frenchman incapable to control a return after over two and a half hours.
