Department of Justice Joins Legal Challenge to Block California's New Electoral Map
The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in federal court, targets the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the final years of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
